The courses students are required to take in the DevOps program in quarters 7-12 depend on the degree a student brings into the program. The Cloud Computing and the Software Development AAS degrees also feed into this program, and each have a set of required courses in the DevOps program. No student will be allowed to register for quarters 7-12 without meeting with DevOps faculty or Program Specialist

Note: It is required for all DevOps students to meet with DevOps faculty or Pathways Specialist in order to register for DevOps courses. Students will be given detailed instructions for which courses they should register for and their success in the program is dependent on appropriate course selection in each quarter.

In addition to holding a technical associate degree in computer network design & administrations, Cloud Computing or Software Development, applicants to the BAS DevOps Engineering will need to meet the minimum requirements outlined below. Students with technical degrees in Computer Network Design & Administrations, Cloud Computing or Software Development are well prepared for the BAS DevOps Engineering.

Courses will be taught entirely online. 20 credits will consist of core courses in DevOps, 35 credits of DevOps electives, and general education courses in communication studies, business, and health.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. An associate degree (90 credits or more) from a regionally accredited college or university in the area of Software Development, Computer Networking, Cloud Computing, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or related field.
  2. Minimum 2.5 cumulative G.P.A.
  3. Minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 in one of the following groups of courses:
    • HTML/CSS3 equivalent to CIS111, Programming equivalent to CIS146, Mobile Development equivalent to CIS218 OR

What is DevOps?

DevOps bonds Software development with the Networking & Cloud operations needed to deploy and manage software. Software development and Networking & Cloud operations historically worked independently of one another, DevOps is the process of combining people, processes, and technologies to build higher quality software rapidly.

The Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in DevOps Engineering will provide students with a foundation of theoretical and technical knowledge in DevOps. This degree prepares graduates to close the gap between software development and IT operations to create a unified and responsive approach to changing business needs and rapidly releasing high-quality application software and IT systems.

What degree does the DevOps program provide?

A Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in DevOps Engineering.

What would my job responsibilities be as a DevOps Engineer?

DevOps Engineers work closely with both development and operations teams to ensure software is delivered quickly, reliably, and securely. They serve as liaisons between these two teams, ensuring continuous updates and deployments are managed in a way that doesn’t compromise stability. DevOps Engineers must possess the communication and management skills needed to oversee and manage the entire software development lifecycle, from planning and development to testing and deployment. Duties and responsibilities can include guiding teams in designing, building, testing, and deploying changes to existing software, enhancing the company’s IT infrastructure security protocols, identifying manual processes that can be automated, consider the organization’s entire IT infrastructure when making changes and improvements, and maintain and improve the company’s cloud infrastructure.

What is the job outlook like for a DevOps Engineer?

The job market outlook is excellent, with a 12% increase (over 10,000 new jobs) in Washington over the past two years.

What do DevOps Engineers make per year?

The median wage for DevOps Engineers in Washington State for 2022 was $151,923.

Are there career services or is there assistance with job placement after graduation?

Career Services staff always promote to students that we are “Here for YOU”.  Services are located inside the Counseling department and online.  Services can continue onward beyond graduation.  We are utilizing software called Bigfoot Jobs (powered by Simplicity) where students can remain in the system and continue to use it as Alumni.

Other supportive services include career exploration, resume writing and interviewing assistance. Annual events including workshops and job fairs are always open to alumni, public, and students.

What is the expected total cost for the BAS if you have an AAS including tuition, fees, and extra costs?

The cost for the 2-year BAS is approximately $17,000 for WA residents, $20,000 for non-residents and $45,000 for international students. There could be additional fee, therefore the cost could be slightly higher.

When do I need to apply for the program, and can I start any term?

The DevOps degree will be offered for the first time in fall 2024, there will be a startup class every fall, winter, and spring quarter. The first enrollment period will open May 28th for fall 2024 enrollment.

What are the required credits for graduation?

90 AAS credits + 90 BAS credits are required to graduate. The BAS credits will include 55 DVOP credits and 35 general education credits. The 55 DVOP credits you take will depend on the AAS degree you enter the BAS with.

If I have an AAS from another college, will I be able to take this program?

Yes, students with IT degrees from other colleges can take the degree. They will have to meet with a faculty member to determine what classes they will take in the BAS degree and to determine if there are any additional pre-req before entering the program. Contact a faculty member for more information at scc.computerinformationsystems@scc.spokane.edu.

Should I finish my AAS first, will my AAS classes count toward the new program?

Yes, you must complete an AAS to enter the BAS in DevOps Engineering. Your AAS classes count toward your AAS degree that is required to enter the BAS. You cannot double dip credits, classes that are counted as part of your AAS cannot be counted as BAS classes.

Is there a course map of the DevOps program?

Yes, the course map depends on the AAS degree a student enters with. The DevOps degree is designed to assure students have a foundation in software development, computer network design and administration, and cloud computing while also providing the skills needed oversee and manage the entire software development lifecycle, from planning and development to testing and deployment. Contact the CIS department for a course map based on your AAS degree by emailing you request to scc.computerinformationsystems@scc.spokane.edu.

How do I sign up?

Registration for the BAS will open May 28th, 2024, for fall 2024 start. If you have graduated with an AAS in Software Development, Computer Network Design and Administration, or Cloud computing from SCC you will enter using the appropriate degree map. If you have an IT related AAS from another institution, you will need to meet with a faculty member to create a graduation plan. Contact a faculty member for more information at scc.computerinformationsystems@scc.spokane.edu.
